As USA Football's director of high performance and education, Joe Eisenmann is at the forefront of a pilot program this year. Eisenmann says USA Football "wanted to follow USA Hockey and the American Development Model," and that USA Hockey has "led in this space." He also notes that, despite some initial pushback, the early returns are favorable from almost all involved.

  Q: My child's 8U team is now in a half-ice league. Does this mean that the coaches will start working on systems and plays?

A: With the increasing number of children playing 8U hockey in the United States, an increasing number of scheduling agreements, leagues and jamborees are being formed. This is not a bad thing. In fact, this is a necessary step for many associations in order to follow more closely one of the most important principles of the ADM: grouping players by similar ability.

To create a great youth sports experience for our kids, it requires a ton of effort. While it's nice to just sit back and enjoy watching your child play, most youth sports programs can't exist without people jumping in to volunteer their time.
