Catch and Release: Shooting tips for 12U and beyond  
 
Not all shots in hockey are created equal – nor are all shot-takers. It takes years of practice to gain the skills necessary to shoot and score at a high level, and many of those skills are prime for development at the 12U age level. Kenny Rausch has some tips on how players at that level can improve their shooting and scoring today – and more importantly, how that improvement can translate into better odds of success down the road.

  Q: Body-checking is illegal in girls and women’s hockey, so why should we divert teaching time to train body-contact skills for female players?

A: Even though body-checking is illegal in the female game, we do have body contact, and a lot of it. Furthermore, the players and teams that are the most skilled in using body contact effectively tend to have the most success.

Repetition
Increasing the repetitions for our players should be a goal within all of our hockey practices and one of the best ways to do this is to break our players into smaller groups and utilize the ice surface more efficiently through station-based practices. Ice time is a valuable commodity; we need to use it wisely.
